Lori McFarling Scholarship for Emerging Leaders in Media and Social Impact

To provide undergraduate scholarship awards for full-time students enrolled in the College of Communication, Media, Design and Information (the “College”) at the University of Colorado Boulder. Scholarships will be awarded to full-time students in the College who have a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0. Eligible applicants will be students who demonstrate a commitment to advancing equity, inclusion, community empowerment, or public-interest outcomes through media, communication, design, and/or information. Such commitment may be demonstrated through personal statements, coursework, internships, or independent projects, and may include areas such as ethical storytelling; social-impact journalism; purpose-driven communications; inclusive design; civic technology or public-interest UX; branded content with cause-aligned goals; community partnerships and community-centered methods; or communication in the public interest or for nonprofit causes. Preference shall be given to students who demonstrate financial need, are first-generation college students, and/or are underrepresented students. For the purposes of this Fund, “first-generation students” are defined as students for whom neither parent/guardian has earned a four-year college degree. “Underrepresented students” are defined as students from geographic areas or socioeconomic backgrounds historically underrepresented in the fields of media, communication, design, and information, and/or students who have faced unusual adversity. Scholarship recipients will be selected in accordance with the University’s established procedures for awarding need-based scholarships. Awards will be made for one academic year and may be renewable based on criteria established by the University.
